Presented by the UMBC Center for Art, Design and Visual Culture, the exhibition Paul Rand: Modernist Design in Context illuminates Rand?s role as a major figure at the epicenter of twentieth-century design. Through original work, photographic reproductions, a contextual timeline, and extensive bibliography, the great American designer?s output over a fifty-five year career and his impact on modern communication practice and theory is illuminated in the context of American visual culture. The exhibition features posters, advertisements, two- and three-dimensional design systems for corporations such as IBM, UPS, ABC Television Co., Westinghouse, NEXT Computers (Apple), and Cummins Engines. The exhibition also showcases his children?s books, drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, and personal ephemera from his estate. Lenders to the exhibition include Yale University?s Sterling Library and numerous private collections.
